Smyrna is the ancient name of Izmir, which is the third largest city in Turkey. Izmir is said to have derived its name from Smyrna, the beautiful queen of the Amazons, the legendary female warriors. Excavations have revealed that the earliest settlement in Izmir was founded in the 3rd Millennium B.C. at present-day Bayraklı. Izmir with a population of more than three million people, carries great significance as one of Turkey’s most important socio-economic and cultural centres, also has within its borders the biggest Gulf to be found along the country’s Aegean coast. Having long enjoyed a reputation as a cosmopolitan and cultural city, Izmir thrives in art and culture. Every year the city holds the Izmir International Fair and Turkish Festival which invites both international and Turkish artists to perform at venues throughout the city.
